So you have your website setup. Now what? You have to write something, but you draw a blank. Many blanks, actually.
You don’t know what or how to write about yourself. You become self-conscious. You think about the judgment you might receive from others. You feel like you don’t having anything to share. You have a hard time imagining that anybody would want to read what you have to share. You don’t want to come off as self-promoting. You don’t think you are an “expert” in anything.
Put that bullshit to bed. YOU are going to write about yourself and portray YOURSELF in the best possible way. Because that is who YOU are.
What are you interested in? What are you learning? What are you doing? There are endless possibilities of where to go with your website.
Below are two basis options to get you started.
OPTION 1 – The Classic Blog Option
The menu bar at the top shows your logo and/or website title with TWO menu options (remember this is for beginners): HOME and ABOUT.
Your HOME page includes your blog content. This page could also offer a “browse by category” option where your blog posts are organized under topics of your choice. You could have a side bar of “Books I am Reading”.
The ABOUT page includes a write up about yourself. Include any relevant information that you are comfortable sharing. If you are writing a book review blog, you could write about your history of reading and reviewing books. How did you get to the point of having a book review blog? Well, you probably started out by reading A LOT. You may have been in book clubs where others were impressed by your insights. They even encourage you to start a blog because of your talent!
OPTION 2 – The WiFi Resume Option
The menu bar at the top shows your logo and/or website title with TWO menu options with an optional THIRD: HOME, BLOG, and PORTFOLIO (optional).
With this option, the ABOUT YOU portion of the website is the featured content of the HOME page. Some of the content may be similar to the ABOUT section in OPTION 1, except you are going to organize it a little differently.
The beauty of having your own website is that you can present yourself however you want. Your home page could be as simple as a business card: Your Name, Preferred Title, Phone Number, and Email Address.
The HOME page is like a resume, but ON STEROIDS.
The classic resume includes the following:
- Your Name
- Your Address
- Your Email Address
- Your Educational Background
- Your Work Experience
I wouldn’t recommend putting your street address on the internet. Leave that for the dumb people. Your online resume is going to be a little be different.
The online resume does not have to include your educational experience or work experience. Unless you are in college and looking for a “normal” job, nobody gives a shit about your educational background. People care about WHAT YOUR HAVE DONE and WHAT YOU ARE DOING and WHAT YOUR DO.
This is why you should include a portfolio if it’s relevant to WHAT YOU DO and you are promoting yourself as a business. If you are a builder SHOW US WHAT YOU HAVE BUILT. If you are an architect, SHOW US YOUR DRAFTS. If you an artist, SHOW US YOUR ART. If you a singer, LINK TO YOUR MUSIC.
If the website more about YOU in general, include a list of your skills and areas of interest or expertise.
If you are a blogger, well, GO TO OPTION 1 and show us some damn articles.
Anyways, here are some elements of a good HOME page for Option 2:
- A picture of yourself.
- A slogan of some sort. Examples:.
- “Live your Life and Share Your Story”
- “Cutting Edge Internet Marketer”
- “Financial Wisdom for the Everyman”.
- “Bob Johnson – Web Designer”
- List of skills ond/or areas of expertise.
- List of areas of interest.
- Whatever YOU want!
Conclusion
You see, writing isn’t that hard. I just proved that you can write about anything.
I HAD NO IDEA what to write, so I fired up the blog and made the title “What to Write on Your Website or Blog” and now I have an article about how to structure you personal website.
It’s that simple. Build the habit. Go write. Live your live and share your story.
